Types of Coffee Beans in Malaysia

There are four types of coffee beans: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and Excelsa.

A total of about 25,000 hectares of coffee are grown mainly in Kelantan, Kedah, Terengganu, Selangor, and Malacca in Malaysia. Malaysia grows a lower grade of Robusta, higher grade of Arabica and Liberica coffee plant varietals. The Liberica coffee varietal takes up 95% of the total crop in Malaysia.

Arabica Coffee Beans

Arabica is the most popular coffee varietal among the four types of coffee beans in the world, including Malaysia. Arabica coffee beans contain a smooth and complex flavour. It is sweeter and lacks bitterness compared to other types of coffee beans. Besides, it contains less caffeine than Robusta.

Robusta Coffee Beans

Robusta is the second-well-known type of coffee bean and is mainly grown in Africa and Indonesia. It is cheaper and contains more caffeine. Robusta is usually used in making espresso drinks and instant coffee due to its bitter taste. It has a strong smell and a somewhat burnt taste. If you are too sleepy, Robusta coffee is suitable to get you started on your morning!

Liberica Coffee Beans

Liberica is sometimes blended with other types of coffee beans to enhance complexity, but gets little recognition. Liberica cherries are famous for their irregular shapes. It is tolerant of hot, humid climates and low altitudes. Therefore, the Liberica varietal is normally grown in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, which make up about 2% of the world’s coffee supply.
